Ex-Man City star Robinho to be jailed in Brazil

Due to a conviction for gang rape, former Man City player Robinho will serve a nine-year prison sentence in Brazil.

Robinho has been told to serve the sentence in his homeland

Former Man City and Brazil player Robinho will reportedly serve a nine-year prison sentence in his home country.

In 2017, Robinho, along with five other Brazilians, was found guilty in Italy of the gang rape of a 22-year-old girl in a Milan night-club back in January 2013 and sentenced to nine years in prison.

Italian authorities had asked to extradite the 40-year-old in January 2022 so that he could serve the sentence in the country where he committed the crime.

However, since Brazil forbids the extradition of its nationals, this request was never approved, allowing Robinho to reside in Brazil for the previous seven years without facing any arrests.

If he had gone to any of the nations with which the Italian government has extradition agreements, he might have been taken into custody.

However, in response to an Italian request, the Brazilian Superior Court of Justice has now decided decisively in favor of allowing Robinho to spend his prison sentence at home.

Phone calls and messages between the football player and the other people who were allegedly involved in the attack were among the evidence presented to condemn the former AC Milan striker.

“It makes me laugh because I’m not interested, the woman was drunk, and she doesn’t even know what happened,” the 38-year-old was seen stating in one of the chats.

Before joining Manchester City on transfer deadline day in September 2008 for a then-British record sum of £32.5 million, Robinho won two La Liga titles at Real Madrid.

He only played for Manchester for two seasons before moving to AC Milan, where he stayed for five years. He committed the crime during this period.

The Brazilian then had spells in China and Brazil.

He also made 100 appearances for his country at international level.
